type1parent - you responded to Donna's "comment" much better than I would have. I understood, perfectly what you were saying - it was the idea that he would intentionally "go low" just to get the candy - very unhealthy and possibly dangerous. Kuddos for being calm and diplomatic! I'm not diabetic but do have difficulty with low blood sugar (as an adult). I feel so much better, physically, when I approach the situation as you suggested.

Donna,

Thanks so much for commenting. We agree completely that a child with Type 1 needs to have as normal a childhood as possible and certainly candy should be part of that. You can actually see our article on Halloween to see how we've managed that holiday with our son.

In this article we are actually focusing on the fact that there are better and healthier solutions to hypoglycemia than candy. Also, as we've explained to our son, trying to "go low" on purpose can be a very dangerous thing and he shouldn't try to do that just to be able to eat candy.

We'd love to hear more about your experiences, feel free to reach out and we'll put them up.

I don't understand why you would scold your child for exercising and wanting Halloween candy. Why not let the poor kid enjoy his life a little and his candy? My son is t1 and and if he wants candy for dessert I give him some and cover the carbs. I would only say no if he was high. His numbers are great. Give the kid a break. Why let his go trick or treating and then scold him for wanting to eat some candy? Hes got it tough enough being type 1. How about this? I say YOU get no candy. Ever.
