Zero Carb Snacks

This item was filled under [ Food information ]

Given our son’s size and weight, our endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) has asked us to only allow him to eat snacks with zero carbohydrates between meals. As he gets older and his body grows, it’ll be easier for him to absorb the spare gram of carbohydrate, but right now, even a little causes spikes in his glucose levels.

Finding snacks with zero carbs is not easy.   We’ve really only found two varieties of food:  cheeses and meats.

Many cheeses out there are zero carbs, however we’ve had to steer away from many of the ‘reduced fat’ cheeses as the manufacturers often place small amounts of sugar in there (to make up for the reduction in fat).

Our favorite cheeses right now are Trader Joe’s Organic String Cheese and the Babybel cheeses that come in red and yellow wrappers.

As for meats, most again are 0 carbs however many deli meats do have trace amounts of sugars in them so that their carb content is in the 1-2 gram range.  Salami is the deli meat we most often go with, but we’re trying to also find alternatives with lower salt and nitrate contents.  Our son also loves his turkey bacon.

There are also a handful of “treats” that we keep around, the best being sugar-free jello.  This comes in many flavors and colors and our son enjoys the wiggle.

Finally, drinks are also a critical part of snacks and to maintain a zero carb snack you essentially have to focus on water or on artificially sweetened drinks.  We try to stay away from diet sodas, but have found that our son really likes Lipton Diet Green Tea.

Do you have any zero carb snacks that you can help us with?

We might have to try Slim Jims. My son is 3 so it’s basically pepperonis or cheese. He hasn’t learned to like turkey or other deli meats yet. Great idea.
